Dear Friend,

We live in a great place. Many of us have lived in a Oakland a long time and have raised our families here.

Before I was elected to the City Council, I didn't spend as much time thinking about what City government can and can't do - or should and shouldn't do - to make our lives better.

Little things. Like speed bumps. Like clean and safe streets. Like schools whose ceilings don't leak.

Nothing fancy. Just the fundamentals.

Now, I spend a great deal of time working on these very things so that my City, our City, is working as best it can.

Sometimes it is frustrating, sometimes it is maddening. Especially when I see how slow the City can be when something needs to be done.

I don't believe in taking a long time to do things. I believe you listen to community concerns, and then you act. And I do believe in finishing what I start.

Our public officials can't do everything, and you shouldn't expect them to. But you must be able to depend on them to do what they say - and get some basic things we need done:

  • Like providing a job in the City you live in
  • A supermarket in your neighborhood
  • Cops out on the street instead of behind a desk somewhere
  • and your questions answered, right away, when you call City Hall.
These are a few of the things I've been working on as your City Councilmember.

Sincerely,

Ignacio De La Fuente
