On January 4th, 2009 I was sworn in to serve Oakland and the residents of District 5 for a fifth consecutive term. I continue to be humbled by the voters’ confidence in me and my efforts to improve the quality of life in Oakland and I am anxious to again have the opportunity to seek solutions to some of the challenges we face. During the 2009 swearing in ceremony, I was elected by my peers to serve as Vice Mayor of our City, in addition to being selected to be the Chair of the Community and Economic Development Committee. While I have seen the city of Oakland through both good times and very challenging times over the course of my time as a city council member, I continue to cherish the opportunities I’ve had to meet individuals who open up their homes, businesses and classrooms to share ideas, experiences and recommendations for ways that we can work together to improve District 5 and drive policies that will enhance the quality of life for all Oakland residents. The importance of a focused, balanced and cohesive City Council has never been more vital to the future of our city. The Council must work together to address the challenges we currently face such as ongoing public safety concerns, nurturing economic development, and, of course, addressing the largest revenue shortfalls the City has ever seen. As I pledged during my 2008 City Council campaign, I remain as focused as ever on addressing the core values of all Oakland residents, which means improving police services, revitalizing neighborhoods, improving our parks, creating options for youth, attracting retail and jobs, and improving the efficiency and delivery of quality City services. I love Oakland. Every day, I’m committed to making Oakland a livable city for you and your family. Thank you for all that you do to make Oakland a better place. |
